Afon Rheidol Testing near Rheidol Reservoir by Keynes Controls
The ARGES Water Quality kit was deployed at River Rheidol / Afon Rheidol near Rheidol Reservoir in August 2026.
The River Rheidol / Afon Rheidol is a major river in Ceredigion, Wales, flowing from the Cambrian Mountains through the Rheidol Valley to the coast at Aberystwyth.
The ARGES Water Quality testing kit was laboratory calibrated just before deployment to ensure accurate readings. The focus of this investigation was the overall water quality of the site, which was found to be excellent. Currently the River Rheidol is the cleanest river tested by Keynes Controls.
The test site was carefully chosen as an example of a perfect location to take measurements using the fluorometers and selective ion sensors for real-time results. The site has slow flowing water and shade due to the public site bridge. The SONDE was deployed into the water under the bridge and in the shade.
The sensor kit was configured to report sewage, pH, Lead, Nitrate, Dissolved Oxygen and CDOM/fDOM.

Measurement System
A wide range of sensors were used to record water quality at River Rheidol. The ARGES Multiparameter SONDE deployed at the site was configured to monitor for sewage, dissolved oxygen, CDOM/fDOM, nitrate, and pH. Additional parameters can be added as and when required.
The fluorometer optics are cleaned automatically by the brush unit before each measurement is taken. Test sites were carefully selected to ensure the water was of a suitable depth for accurate readings. As fluorometers use light to determine chemical concentrations, site selection also took into account background light levels to ensure they would not interfere with results.
The real-time SONDE was used at River Rheidol / Afon Rheidol near Rheidol Reservoir and the results displayed to a Windows Laptop Screen. All of the other ARGES Water Quality sensors respond immediately upon insertion into the river. The images below show a sample of the results recorded at the River.
The ARGES Water Quality kit is modular and can be reconfigured in the field should that be necessary. The fluorometer optics were cleaned using the submersible brush unit prior to any measurement being taken.
