The Intelligent Submersible Dissolved Lead Sensor By Keynes Controls, is a high performance submersible sensor that has been designed to simplify the acquisition of water quality measurement parameters into any platform that supports data logging operations using digital network communications.

Each of the Intelligent Submersible Dissolved Lead Sensor by Keynes Controls is suitable for direct connection to industry standard SDI12 Data Recorder, RS485 and MODBUS networks. The instruments can communicate directly across a MODBUS network and can be integrated into plant wide SCADA applications and to to many 3rd party PLC controllers.

Drinking water contaminated with lead can cause significant problems with brain development in children. Lead poisoning has also been known to cause reproductive issues, brain damage (which in itself can lead to behavioural issues), and heart, liver, and kidney issues. Lead continues to accumulate in the body, so even small amounts of pollution present a serious health hazard. The current UK water standard allows no more than 10 parts per billion of lead, but the official goverment advice is to avoid all contact with lead as much as possible, due to aforementioned tendency to accumulate rather than leave the body.

Sensor Construction

The sensor is manufactured using PVC body construction allows for long-term deployment of sensors for remote applications. The sensor connector is gold plated, making it suitable for underwater connections.

ISOLATION

The sensor element of the Lead Sensor is isolated to prevent any current flow between measurements. This prevents contamination of the sensor element and maintains the long active life of the device. When no measurement is being made the sensor is in low power mode.

Impacts of lead pollution

Impacts of lead pollution Harm to aquatic ecosystems:

High levels of lead can have an adverse impact on river wildlife, affecting populations of fish and invertebrates. Water quality degradation: Lead can make river water unsafe for both wildlife and potentially for human use if it contaminates drinking water sources. Human health risks: Lead is a toxic heavy metal that is harmful even at low concentrations and can cause severe health issues.

Calibration Summary

The ARGES Lead sensor is typically calibrated at 2 points, these being a known high and low value dissolved lead concentration.  The sensors are shipped factory calibrated. Keynes Controls use 100 ppm for the high level calibration point, and 10 ppb for the low level calibration point. The sensor should be calibrated at the temperature into which it will be deployed for optimum results.

The ARGES Lead sensor is a solid state selective-ion device and as such temperature variations in the test solutions can effect the results. The calibration procedure allows the user to enter a temperature correction factor and calibration temperature. A compensated reading is available as a parameter from the sensor.

Keynes Controls offer a calibration kit for The Lead Sensor and this is available from the online store.

Storage and Handling

When not in use the ARGES Lead Sensor by Keynes Controls head should be kept hydrated with the protective cap attached.

Storage temperature range : 2 - 60 Degrees Celsius.

Further Information

The ARGES Lead Sensor by Keynes Controls monitors lead levels in water. The ARGES Lead Sensor readings are influenced by temperature . For comprehensive insights into dissolved lead levels in a water source, it is recommended to deploy this sensor alongside other water quality  sensors.

Fresh Water Dissolved Lead Levels

  • Lead in Drinking Water - House of Commons Library - 21st May 1997 - Level of lead in drinking water should not exceed 50 µg/l
  • Common UK Standard is 10 µg/l  target for many organisations involved in water treatment.
  • River water Dissolved Lead typically 3 -30 ppb

Salt Water Dissolved Lead Levels

Seawater contains trace amounts of lead (2-30 ppb). On average rivers contain between 3 and 30 ppb. Phytoplankton contains approximately 5-10 ppm lead (dry mass), freshwater fish approximately 0.5-1000 ppb, and oyster approximately 500 ppb.

Temperature -  Dissolved Lead

Each 1 degree Celsius rise in water temperature boosts dissolved lead levels by about 17 percent and lead particles by about 36 percent,

Application Uses

  • Water Quality Monitoring
  • Run-off contamination water sources.
  • Suitable for Laboratory and Field Applications
  • Low Cost
  • No Filling Solution
  • Rugged Solid State

Commonly used with: Hydrocarbon, pH, Turbidity  Sensors.

The ARGES Lead Sensor by Keynes Controls detects the levels of Lead in water. The sensor is often combined with additional sensors such as Turbidity and pH. All of the ARGES sensors measure the sample temperature. Like all ion-selective-electrode sensors they are effected by variations in temperature. Accurate temperature measurements are used to privde compensated results.

Hydrocarbon Sensor =The ARGES Hydrocarbon Fluorometer by Keynes Control is a single-channel instrument that can detect and report hydrocarbon levels levels in the range of 0 - 2000 ppb and temperature in Degrees Celsius.

MODBUS Operations

ALL of the ARGES range of chemical sensors support MODBUS network operations The sensors act as a slave unit only and can communicate to suitable controllers and SCADA systems that support the MODBUS Protocol. The sensors support 16 and 32 bit registers.

The ARGES sensors can be connected to a PC based system using the optional USB-485-Pro media converter. This device can power the chemical sensor and supports the correct timing protocols for data transmission for MODBUS and standard RS485 network communications.

Accessories

Keynes Controls manufactures a range of accessories that can be used to connect the ARGES range of sensors to a Windows computer system and enable the sensors to be used in laboratory applications, multi-parameter instruments and calibration operations.

The optional USB media converters can be used to connect a multi-parameter instrument to a PC.

The media converter powers the ARGEs sensor range directly from the PC USB port.
