ARGES Nitrate Sensor
The Intelligent Submersible Nitrate Sensor By Keynes Controls, is a submersible sensor that has been designed to simplify the acquisition of water quality measurement parameters into any platform that supports real-time reporting, data logging operations. The sensor element is isolated between measurements in order to prolong its active life and reduct power.
The sensor can be installed into a Keynes multi-parameter SONDE, used as a laboratory stand-alone device that can also be connected to a Windows PC using a USB media converter.
The ARGES Nitrate sensor can act as a MODBUS slave sensor be connected directly to SCADA systems. a
The ARGES Nitrate Sensor by Keynes Controls directly supports SDI12, RS485 and MODBUS digital networks.
ISOLATION
The sensor element of the Nitrate Sensor is isolated when not to required for any measurements. This prevents contamination of the sensor element and maintains the long active life of the device.
When no measurement is being made the sensor is in low power mode.
Measurement Integrity
All of the ARGEs sensor range have the serial number and the last calibration date stored internally. The user can access this information for reporting purposes. The sensors can be redeployed at any time with the calibration and serial number records are retained in the sensor.

Calibration Summary
The Intelligent Submersible Nitrate Sensor By Keynes Controls can be used within SONDE multi-parameter housing, or as a stand-alone sensor. The Nitrate sensor should calibrated before use for optimum results.
Keynes Controls offer a calibration kit for The Intelligent Submersible Dissolved Oxygen Sensor and this is available from the online store.
The ARGES Nitrate sensor is typically calibrated at 2 points. A Zero point which uses distilled water, and the high end calibration point using one of the calibration standard solutions.. The overall accuracy of the sensor will depend upon how well the sensor is calibrated. For optimum results calibrate the sensor at the same temperature as the solution under test.
Multiparameter System
The ARGES Nitrate sensor can be fitted inside a multi-parameter SONDE and used in collaboration with additional ARGES instruments.
The image opposite shows a group of ARGES sensors in a SONDE, The SONDE is being tested using the Keynes QLOG software which is freely issued with this product.
Storage and Handling
When not in use the ARGES Intelligent Submersible Dissolved Oxygen Sensor By Keynes Controls head should be kept hydrated with the protective cap attached.
Storage temperature range : 2 - 60 Degrees Celsius.
Further Information
The majority of nitrate in groundwater in the UK is derived from diffuse pollution from agriculture, with the rest from sewage sludge disposal to land, atmospheric deposition and point sources.
Nitrate levels in our water resources have increased in many areas due to applications of inorganic fertiliser and animal manure in agricultural areas. The regulatory limit for nitrate in public drinking water supplies was set to protect against infant methemoglobinemia, but other health effects have not been considered.

Built-in Communication Options
The ARGES Nitrate Sensor supports SDI12, RS485 and MODBUS digital communications as standard enabling it to be directly connected to Data Logger for remote web based reporting, onto Wi-Fi and Local Area Networks using the RS485 option. The MODBUS and RS485 option are often used to connect sensors to a PLC Controller and Display Units,. The MODBUS protocol enables the sensors to be used directly by most SCADA applications software.
MODBUS Operations
ALL of the ARGES range of chemical sensors support MODBUS network operations The sensors act as a slave unit only and can communicate to suitable controllers and SCADA systems that support the MODBUS Protocol. The sensors support 16 and 32 bit registers. .
The ARGES sensors can be connected to a PC based system using the optional USB-485-Pro media converter. This device can power the chemical sensor and supports the correct timing protocols for data transmission for MODBUS and standard RS485 network communications
Multiparameter Housing
The ARGES Nitrate Sensor by Keynes Controls can be used as a stand-alone device or as a part of a multi-parameter solution. Keynes Controls currently manufacture 7 port and 3 port sensor housings. An optional submersible brush unit is available for cleaning the fluorometer optics and this can be fitted into any port within the housings.
Only a single network connection fitted to the base of the housing is required to communicate with all the internal sensors. The internal sensors will automatically detect the network traffic and start operations. All of the sensors support SDI12, RS485 and MODBUS communications.
Multiparameter Measurements
The ARGES Chemical sensors by default take measurements sequentially and as such there will be no light pollution between sensors that can affect the results of adjacent fluorometers. Some of the filters for the different model sensors can operate at similar wavelengths and as such, a sensor monitoring for a specific chemical could effect the levels measured on a similar device.
Optional Accessories
Keynes Controls manufactures a range of accessories that can be used to connect the ARGES range of sensors to a Windows computer system and enable the sensors to be used in Laboratory applications, multi-parameter instruments and calibration operations.
The optional USB media converter can be used to connect The ARGES Nitrate Sensor by Keynes Controls, or a multi-parameter instrument containing the Nitrate Sensor to a Windows PC. Free applications software enables measurements to made and results displayed. The QLOG software can be used to adjust the instrument configuration.
